The Power of Four
Spinn – Reimagining the Rotary Legacy
Spinn was designed to offer a fresh take on one of music’s most classic modulation effects: the rotary speaker. Rather than sticking to pure emulation, Spinn builds on this heritage and charts its own course – giving producers, sound designers, and musicians a tool that's equal parts familiar and boldly new.
A Spin on the Classic
To understand what makes Spinn unique, it helps to revisit our inspiration. The Leslie speaker, developed in the 1940s, transformed the sound of electric organs – and later guitars, vocals, and synths – by rotating speakers to create rich, swirling Doppler effects. This motion introduced complex variations in pitch, phase, and amplitude, resulting in that unmistakable shimmer heard across decades of soul, jazz, and rock.
While common rotary speaker plugins aim to replicate that exact vintage character, our approach with Spinn was different. We treated the rotary concept as a starting point – not the final destination.
Multiband Modulation
At the heart of Spinn is a four-band modulation engine. Incoming audio is split into four adjustable frequency bands, each sent through its own virtual rotor. Every band has fully independent parameters: speed (slow or fast), acceleration, deceleration, rotor size, modulation depth, and optional velocity sensitivity.
This multiband approach is somewhat untraditional. Spinn lets you dial in deep, slow movement in the lows, while midrange frequencies swirl more moderately, and highs spin quickly – all reacting dynamically to your input signal if you choose. The result is a modulation engine that feels layered, animated, and far more customizable than traditional rotary speaker emulations. It’s not just about recreating the past – it’s about creating movement and rhythm in entirely new ways.
Who Is It For?
Spinn was designed for sound designers, producers, and musicians looking to add motion, depth, and a sense of organic movement to their audio. It works beautifully on pads, guitars, vocals, synths, and even full drum busses. While it absolutely can deliver a rotary speaker-style swirl, we built it to go further – to function as a multiband tremolo, chorus, or rhythmically responsive modulator. For those looking for a more dimensional, frequency-aware approach to motion, Spinn offers something a bit different: a creative tool that respects its analog roots while fully embracing digital possibilities.
Whether you're after that vintage shimmer or something completely new, Spinn is our invitation to experiment. While it draws inspiration from a rich musical legacy, it’s designed for modern workflows – ideal for anyone looking to add life and motion to static sources.
