How Korvpressor brings transparency and simplicity to one of audio's most confusing tools. You could almost say we compressed the compressor.
What compression actually does
If you work with audio, you will eventually need a good compressor in your toolbox. Korvpressor was designed as a smart adaptive compressor/limiter for all purposes in audio treatment. Great, you might say, but what is this compressor business all about anyway? At its core, a compressor is a volume knob that turns itself down automatically. When a signal exceeds a set threshold, the compressor reduces its gain by a ratio you define. The result is a more controlled, consistent signal. A vocal that stays audible in a dense mix, a drum that doesn't clip on hard hits, a bass guitar that sits tightly in the pocket.
But the magic – and the devil – is in the details. How fast does the compressor react? (Attack.) How quickly does it let go? (Release.) How steeply does it engage? (Ratio.) How hard does it clamp down? (Threshold and gain reduction.) Getting these wrong can make a mix sound lifeless, brittle, or oddly squashed. Getting them right is an art developed over years of careful listening.
A less complex approach
When we designed Korvpressor, we asked ourselves how much of that complexity was actually necessary. The answer, we found, was very little. The Korvpressor interface comes down to three decisions: input level, compression amount, output level.
Under the hood, though, the algorithm is doing considerably more. The compression engine was designed with transparency as its primary objective. Rather than imparting a strong character or colour, the way vintage-style hardware emulations often do, Korvpressor aims to be invisible when you want it invisible. It controls your dynamics without announcing itself. The result is a plugin that works remarkably well on almost any source: a vocal, a drum bus or a full mix. Ease up and you'd barely know it was there. Push it harder and a pleasing density emerges that can genuinely bring a track to life.
Who is Korvpressor for?
Korvpressor fits a wide range of users. Beginners will quite possibly find it the least intimidating introduction to compression available – the defaults are sensible, the interface is self-explanatory, and the presets provide a guided tour of what the plugin can do. Intermediate engineers will appreciate the speed: no menu-diving, no endless tweaking, just fast results that hold up in a dense mix. And experienced producers will find that the transparent algorithm and its controls make it genuinely useful as a utility compressor throughout a session, from tracking to final bounce.
Few tools in audio inspire as much confusion and tedious knob-tweaking as the compressor. Korvpressor was built to change that. It has been in a lot of sessions over the years, and we still think it's one of the most useful things we've made.
